Presents Facts About ... Diabetes

Diabetes Mellitus (type 1 and type 2) is a chronic disease that affects almost 14 million Americans - approximately 6% of the population, or 6 of every 100 persons. You are definitely not alone! About 5 to 10% of diabetics are Type 1; meaning they need insulin to survive. A far greater percentage of cases of diabetes - 90 to 95% - are Type 2. These people can sometimes be managed by nutrition and lifestyle changes, although sometimes oral hypoglycemic medications and/or supplemental insulin may be necessary.

What are the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes? They include: excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, vision changes to name a few. What you should do… see your primary care physician immediately (this way you can develop the approach to your individual care). Your next step, seek the advice of a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, (RD, CDE). We can help you find a healthful balance in your eating pattern in order to bring your blood sugar back into a normal range.

Just as no one medication regimen or exercise program works for all people, no one eating plan can work for everyone with diabetes. For many people, this means modifying -- not abandoning - your current eating habits.

The 1994 nutrition recommendations from the American Diabetes Association strongly state that a dietitian should individualize the Medical Nutritional Therapy for each person with diabetes. Long gone are the days of the "1200 calorie diabetic diet". If you happen to have one of these, feel free to go ahead and toss it at this time. A compilation of beliefs of the American Diabetic Association, American Dietetic Association, and the Association of Diabetes Educators puts forth the goals of Medical Nutrition Therapy.
